My family and I LOVED the city of Cologne! It feel awe-inspiring right upon arrival as you exit the train station and gaze up at the impressive Cologne Cathedral. At the foot of the cathedral you encounter the very first Christmas market. The sights, smells and sounds immediately put you into the festive spirit. We found the people of Cologne to be kind and welcoming.

You’ll find iconic favorites like the Christmas Market at Cologne Cathedral and Heinzels Winter Fairytale in the Old Town which draw massive crowds with their dazzling displays, skating rinks, and artisanal crafts.

The Christmas Market Express Train
Did you know that Cologne offers it’s own magical little train called “The Christmas Market Express” to get around the city and easily see the 4 major markets? From the various stopping points along the route, you’ll find it a quick jaunt to get to the smaller Christmas markets as well.
The train is a hop-on/hop-off service that runs every 15 minutes. For €15/pp you’ll receive round trip tickets. There are several stops, with the main cathedral stop being the most convenient as a starting point! Check out the time timetables and most up-to-date pricing here.

There are lots of great places to stay in Cologne. My family and I stayed nearby the cathedral and central train station for easy transportation links.
It can be hard to decide whether to stay at Historic Hotels or Inns, Chain Hotels, City Center Hotels, Bed & Breakfasts. I have some additional information to help you weigh the pros and cons of each type of accommodation, with a couple of great options located in central in Cologne below:

Budget Option ($): The Ibis Hotel Köln Dom
The Ibis Hotel Köln Dom boasts an unbeatable location right next to Cologne Cathedral, placing you just steps from the city’s top attractions and Christmas markets.
Offering comfortable rooms, a satisfying breakfast, and easy access to public transport, it’s the perfect choice for a convenient and affordable stay.

Best Times to Visit
To make the most of Cologne’s magical Christmas markets, timing is everything. Visiting during the week, shortly after the markets open around 11 AM, is ideal if you want to avoid crowds and enjoy a leisurely experience.
For a more festive atmosphere, evenings are a great choice—arriving a couple of hours before the market closes allows you to soak up the twinkling lights and lively ambiance without the peak-time hustle.
Pro Tip: I highly recommend you avoid visiting the larger Cologne markets on the weekends. The first day we arrived and stopped by the Cathedral Market was a Saturday and it was HEAVING. Shoulder to shoulder with people. While it didn’t ruin our experience, I recommend planning your visit around the slower times if possible.

Top 3 Food & Drink to Try at the Cologne Christmas Markets

1) Kartoffelpuffer or Reibekuchen (Potato Panccakes)
These were my #1 favorite food while in Cologne. They are made of grated potatoes, well seasoned and then fried until golden and crispy. They are traditionally served with applesauce.
- Where to get it: Most Christmas Markets in Cologne offer these tasty potato treats. We thought the ones near the Cathedral were the best, and so we went back for more! YUM!

2) Glühwein – (Hot Mulled Wine)
Glühwein is the most popular beverage with tourists and locals alike. I have a long love history with mulled wine after I brought a steeping package back from England in 2012. It’s not Christmas for me without warming up the insides with this spiced treat! Typically served as red wine.
- Where to get it: Glühwein can be found at EVERY Christmas market in Cologne. You might find some fun variations including hot spiced white wine, or Glühwein with Amaretto.
- Mugs: Glühwein in Germany typically comes in beautiful ceramic mugs with the name of the market on them. This has become a bit of a social media trend in recent years with people posting a photo, or keeping the Glühwein mug to take home as a souvenir.
- Deposit: Deciding to keep the mug is okay, as you do pay a “Pfand” or “Deposit” on the mug. The cost is anywhere from €3-5, which if you return the mug you’ll get back.

3) Bratwurst – (Sausage Wrapped in a Bun)
At the Cologne Cathedral Market, bratwurst is a must-try classic that’s both delicious and convenient. Typically made with pork, veal, or beef – the recipe varies from region to region with 40 known varieties!
Served in a crusty bun, this perfectly grilled sausage boasts a smoky flavor and juicy texture that’s hard to resist.
Top it with a variety of mustards and onions for an extra punch of flavor. It’s the ultimate grab-and-go snack, letting you savor the festive atmosphere while strolling through the market’s magical stalls.
Where to get it: We found different types of bratwurst at every Christmas Market we visited in Cologne. Look out for the “half-meter” wurst at Heinzels Winter Fairytale!

Gifts to Buy
The Cologne Christmas Markets are a treasure trove of unique and festive gifts that bring the magic of the season to life. Among the highlights are intricate Christmas pyramids, with their charming spinning tiers powered by candlelight, and handmade wooden ornaments that add a touch of rustic elegance to any tree.
Delicate paper stars for your windows cast a cozy glow when lit, creating an enchanting holiday ambiance. For foodies, gift sets of eggnog make a decadent treat, perfect for sipping on cold winter nights.
And don’t miss the whimsical mini German incense houses, which puff fragrant smoke from their tiny chimneys, making them both a conversation piece and a nostalgic nod to traditional German craftsmanship. These gifts capture the heart and soul of Cologne’s festive spirit!

Expert Tips for Visiting Cologne’s Christmas Markets
What to Wear
When visiting the Christmas markets in Cologne, it’s all about layering for warmth and comfort. Start with a base of merino wool close to the skin, then add jeans or trousers on top. I have some other great suggestions on what to pack when visiting the Christmas Markets in Europe over winter.
Don’t forget merino wool socks to keep your feet cozy, and top it off with a beanie, toque, or scarf to protect from the wind. One day we had rain, so an umbrella came in handy. I also recommend waterproof outer layers and comfy, waterproof shoes like Vessi (which my husband and I wore) to stay dry while exploring.

How to Plan Your Time in Cologne
When my family and I visited the European Christmas Markets last year, I needed to find a way to keep everything organized. Afterall, we were visiting 4 countries and 18 places across 3 weeks.
I downloaded several handy apps to keep on my phone so I could refer back to them when needed. My favorite were: Tripit, a Currency Converter, Google Translate, Rome2Rio and more. I wrote an entire post on the Top 10 Most Popular (and in my opinion MOST USEFUL) apps available to download for 2025.
The next question you should be asking is ‘How do I stay connected to the internet while traveling to Europe?” That’s an easy one. Instead of paying “roam like home” costs to expensive local home carriers, I downloaded an eSIM and turned my home data off. This saved our family HUNDREDS of dollars in roaming fees.
FAQ
There are some fairly common questions about the Christmas Markets in Cologne, let me see if I can answer some below for you. If your question isn’t answered below, don’t hesitate to reach out to me here.
Are the Markets Family-Friendly?
The markets are VERY family friendly! We saw every age category from young to old at the markets.
Pro Tip: If you plan on bringing a stroller with you, I really recommend planning your visit during the week. When the markets are packed shoulder to shoulder, the strollers are cumbersome to navigate!
Are Pets Allowed?
Dogs are allowed at the Christmas Markets in Cologne, and we saw A LOT of them! Some of the market stalls even set out water for your furry friend.
If you’re planning on bringing your pet, I would recommend you pick a quieter market time where crowds are not too overwhelming for them.
Are Credit Cards Widely Accepted?
Credit cards are widely accepted in Germany, but we did run into several Christmas Market Stalls than only accepted cash. Bring just enough cash for what you think you’ll spend for 1 day at the markets, and leave the rest back in your hotel safe.
Is there an Entrance Fee?
All the Christmas Markets we visited in Cologne were free of charge to enter.
Are the Christmas Markets in Cologne Safe?
We spent several days exploring Cologne and never once felt unsafe in the city. As mentioned above, the weekends can see peak crowd levels at the markets, and you can end up shoulder to shoulder with other people. In this instance, I would recommend putting your valuables on an inside pocket, or using a wrist-strap to secure your phone to your person.
Like any other country in the world, you want to keep your wits about you in crowded, unfamiliar places.
Why is Cologne so popular for Christmas Markets?
Cologne’s Christmas markets are the stuff of holiday dreams, and it’s no wonder they’re so wildly popular. Imagine stepping out of the central train station, greeted by the towering spires of the Cologne Cathedral, and being just steps away from a winter wonderland! We couldn’t believe our eyes!
Each market has its own unique charm—from twinkling lights and festive music to the irresistible aroma of bratwurst and mulled wine drifting through the air. Whether it’s the magical decorations, the heartwarming traditions, or the sheer ease of hopping from one market to the next, Cologne’s Christmas markets capture the spirit of the season like no other. It’s a place where holiday magic feels just a little more real.

Conclusion
Cologne’s Christmas markets were truly a magical experience, unlike anything we have back home in Canada. From the awe-inspiring cathedral to the charming old buildings nestled along the Rhine, the city felt like stepping into a festive fairytale.
I loved the ease of wandering between markets, each offering its own unique vibe, along with countless delicious foods and drinks to try. But what made it even more special were the connections we made—chatting with friendly locals and learning about Cologne’s rich traditions on our tours.
It’s easy to see why millions of visitors return year after year to soak up the festive spirit. Cologne’s Christmas markets aren’t just a celebration of the season; they’re a celebration of community, culture, and the joy of coming together.
We started planning our Christmas Market adventure 12 months in advance – be sure to start planning and scheduling yours as soon as possible. Don’t wait for your favorite hotel to be sold out of rooms; and believe me – they certainly do around the Christmas season!
Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays from my family to yours!
